Southern Delaware Chorale Presents “A Summer Sing”

The Southern Delaware Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Colin Armstrong with accompanist and Assistant Director Sarah Rose, will be presenting a 30-minute free concert entitled, “A Summer Sing” on Sunday, June 6 th at 3 pm at Crossroads Community Church, 20684 State Forest Road, Georgetown, Delaware. Selections will include songs from ‘Silver Screen and Stage,’ that include Broadway and film music.

Due to COVID-19, the Southern Delaware Chorale suspended all activities in March of 2020, along with every other choir around the world. They finally began ZOOM rehearsals in January and began in-person, masked and distanced small group sectionals March 30. Because most members became vaccinated, the group began full socially-distanced, masked rehearsals at Crossroads Community Church April 27.

The Southern Delaware Chorale is delighted to finally come together in a limited and safe way to share the joy that is choral singing. For the safety of all during the June 6 event, masks must be worn by the audience, and social distancing will be adhered to. The singers, Artistic Director and accompanist will also be wearing masks and socially distanced.
We hope that you will be able to join us for this joyful celebration of singing.

Southern Delaware Chorale COVID-19 Impact Statement

Southern Delaware Chorale
COVID-19 Impact Statement

The Southern Delaware Chorale has been a part of the Sussex County arts scene for over 30 years, providing quality choral performances to audiences of all ages. Like all choral organizations around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted our gathering ability to safely rehearse and perform the choral music we all love. By its very nature, choral singing is a social activity that requires large groups to gather in small spaces to sing in one voice. Unfortunately, studies continue to reveal the dangers of aerosol droplet emissions while singing.

One such study from Colorado State University says “performance artists are likely to display ‘forced-air breathing’ (more like sneezing and coughing) while they are singing.” Another study found that infectious aerosolized particles may be transmitted as far as 13 feet from the individual.

This has been a very difficult time for the entire Southern Delaware Chorale
organization. We suspended our activities in March, canceling all spring rehearsals and our May concert “Sounds of Silver Screen & Stage” slated for Sunday, May 3. As we have many singers who are senior citizens and many with pre-existing conditions, the Board of Directors and artistic staff have concluded that conditions remain unsafe for gathering in large numbers for rehearsals.

Because we care greatly for the health and well-being of our membership and our audiences, we have decided to cancel our previously-scheduled 2020 holiday season concert. We are basing all decisions on science and facts to protect all involved. At this time, we anticipate rehearsals starting up in January 2021 if it is deemed safe to do so by medical experts. January’s rehearsals will help us prepare for our next performance “Sounds of Silver Screen & Stage” in May 2021. Please visit www.southerndelawarechorale.org for updates on that, and all other future
events.

We thank all who have supported us in the past and continue to do so in the future. Please be safe, be kind, be well.

Spring Semester COVID-19 Update

Due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Southern Delaware Chorale has had to terminate its spring semester. We will not be rehearsing on Tuesdays, and the concert scheduled for Sunday, May 3, 2020, has been cancelled.

The Board of Directors is currently in talks about what – if anything – we will be doing in the fall, taking into consideration the health and welfare of our participants and our patrons. Rehearsals have not been scheduled for fall as yet; the future is just so unpredictable at this time.

Thank you to all the Patrons, Sponsors, Advertisers, and DDOA who have supported us in the past. We hope that we’ll all be back together as soon as is possible.

March 17th Rehearsal Canceled

In light of Governor Carney’s announcement of a State of Emergency and his closing schools for 2 weeks, SDC has decided to cancel the March 17 rehearsal at Georgetown Presbyterian. It’s St. Patrick”s Day; we can all celebrate – at home!

Stay tuned! We shall wait and see about the following rehearsal, March 24.
